Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF)

This centre, sponsored by DBT, Govt. of India, situated in the Department of Microbiology is functional since August 2007.
The aim of establishing this center was to disseminate the idea and knowledge about bioinformatics in the southern parts of the state.
In biological research, now a day’s bioinformatics has become an integral part.
Considering this, our centre regularly contacts workshops and seminars for students (UG and PG), scholars and teachers.
The centre is well equipped for conducting such trainings and also to pursue research works.
Area of Specialization :
- Structure-Function analysis of different industrially important enzymes
- Structure prediction, docking, energy minimization &molecular dynamics
- Evolutionary biology and Comparative genomics
- Machine learning techniques
- Protein-protein interaction and biological networks
- Use of R statistical environment

The following research fellows are engaged in the department
Partha S. Das is working as RA. His main areas of interest include Phylogenetic analysis,
Evolutionary study, Protein-protein interaction, Machine learning and Biostatistics.
Amrita Banerjee is working as Research Fellow.
Her major areas of interest include Protein structure prediction, docking and molecular simulation and dynamics.
Shilpee Pal is working as Trainee. Her major areas of interest include Comparative genomics,
Evolutionary study, Genetic variation analysis and Phylogenetic analysis.

Collaborative works/initiatives in R&D activities :
- With Prof. Tapash C Ghosh, Scientist, Bioinformatics Department, Bose Institute, Kolkata on Machine learning.
- With Dr. Arnab Sen, Coordinator BIF center, University of North Bengal for studies in protein structure based phylogenetic analysis, protein-protein interaction, nucleotide expression, etc.
- With Dr.Indraneel Mukherjee, ISI Kolkata also have been collaborating with us for studies in machine learning and biostatistics (specially solving problems through R) respectively.
- With Prof. CsabaVágvölgyi,Department of Microbiology Faculty of Sciences and informatics University of Szeged Hungaryon HGT based detection of emerging human mycoses.

Twenty four hours leased line internet facility is available in this center. The Department is also connected through WiFi provided by the Centre.
