About the Department
The department of Fishery Sciences initiated in the year 2003 to fulfil the demand of different UG students of Vidyasagar University as well as Industrial Fish & Fisheries (IFF) of different state Universities. The department has crossed around 16 years of its academic journey producing more than 500 Post Graduate students and most of them have recruited in different corporate jobs including Government sectors. The total area of the department is more than 3000 sq.ft (Approx.) with two lecture halls, one general laboratory, one computer laboratory and an outdoor culture unit located besides the science building. The department offers Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Fisheries Science. The total number of seat is 37 for the M.Sc. students. Syllabus was upgraded to CBCS pattern from 2016-17 in order to make a blend between present and future aspects of Fisheries Science in the arena of academic spheres. The course is semester mode of teaching which includes: class teaching, laboratory work, dissertation work, field study and internal assessment. To enrich the academic programs a number of eminent Faculties and Scientists from different Indian Universities and ICAR Fisheries Institutes were invited as Visiting Professor and Visiting Fellow respectively. The placement records of last five years showed that the students were getting absorbed in various national and multinational companies along with the Govt. sectors.
