Department Profile

“Department of Computer Science” is one of the flourishing and promising departments functioning among 32 departments in University. In the year 1999, Computer Centre facilitated MCA approved by AICTE along with few other computer related diploma courses. The process continued for almost three year until new course M. Sc. computer science was introduced in the year 2002, this marked to be the new era as Department of Computer Science was established with two courses that is MCA and M.Sc. Computer Science. Presently, the department is running full fledged with these two courses.

At the beginning phase of its introduction, the department could not gather up enough infrastructures but even then students managed to get through with flying colours and now they have been working with well reputed companies like IBM, CTS, TCS etc. Now the department provides students with six air-conditioned laboratories with a minimum of 110 computers with 24 hours internet connection facility and well managed lecture rooms. The department also has its own Departmental Library which holds almost all the books required for the students. The infrastructure of the department is well flourished according to its convenience for the students and their studies. The teaching faculties provided are well educated who are highly knowledgeable with a welcoming nature.

Various reputed companies like Business Pro, IMOS, TCS, Laser5 Co. Ltd. RS software, ISIS design service, Infoway Private Limited to name few, conduct their seminars here and the students are placed with a respectable post in these companies. Almost 80% of the students are placed in a good companies before the completion of their courses.

The syllabus had been designed taking note of the requirements of the software industry and also to facilitate higher education and research. The syllabus is being highly appreciated by the industry and higher education institutes for further research purposes.

The department has also conducted various seminars in collaboration with other companies named “BlueHorse”, ”Neome” and “ASNDS” which were held between the sessions of 2010-2014. Students of this department also visited Haldia Institute of Technology and Management with a resolution of joining a seminar in the year 2014. The students are taken out for an educational tour every year.

The Department Offers Following Programs of Study:-

Master of Computer Application (M.C.A)

The Master of Computer Applications (MCA) Program is a three years (six semesters) course open to graduates in any stream having studied Mathematics up to 10+2 level. The program is a right mix of Core and Application areas approved by AICTE.

Admission to MCA course is made on the basis of performance in joint entrance examination for computer application (JECA) held by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board with a maximum seat capacity of 60 students.

M.Sc. in Computer Science

The M. Sc in Computer Science is a two years (four semesters) course. Admission to M.Sc. computer science is granted to students who have qualified in the B.Sc. Computer Science (Hons.) and is strictly on the basis of the rules laid down by the government. The maximum seat capacity of this course is 37 students.

The department reflect a proverb all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, therefore we persuade all our students to participate in all the extra activities that befalls. The department supports students with all the upcoming activity whether it be a sports or a platform concert. The students have participated in several outdoor activities like cricket, volleyball, football, basketball to name few and several indoor activity like rangoli, chess, ludo, drawing, poster making etc. and have also managed to attain a victory in it. Coming to the stage performance the students also participated in debate, quiz, dance, song competition and made the department proud of it.

The department also organizes an annual fest “ULLAS” to rejoice entrance of fresher to the computer science family. The department ensures that the entire batch of the department summons up and get to know where about each other therefore a reunion “PHIRE PAWA” of students is held up at least once in a year. The department bids farewell to the outgoing students in an extraordinary fashion by organising a “SAYONARA” so that they enjoy their last concluding days in the department.
