The Department of History was established in 1989, with two whole-time
teachers and 80 students. It now has 8 faculty positions; 1 Professor, 1 Associate
Professor, and 5 Assistant Professors. Each class has a capacity of 108 students.
Admission is strictly on the basis of merit. The Department attracts students
mainly from the two districts of Medinipur, and also from adjoining and faraway
parts of West Bengal.
The Department, in order to make intellectual exercise meaningful and relevant,
attempts to reflect in the syllabus the socio-economic realities of this culturally
unique and remote region of South West Bengal. To keep students updated, the
syllabus includes new courses such as Environmental History, Women’s History,
Contemporary History, and the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine.
Seminars and special lectures are held all round the year to familiarize them
to the wide world of History and to make study exciting. The teachers of the
Department regularly participate in seminars and conferences at the national and
international levels and endeavour to contribute to the ever-expanding horizons
of the discipline of History.
