Department Profile
About the department: -
Remote Sensing and GIS has been developed as a powerful technology for mapping and analyzing earth resources.
Although it has been widely used as a mapping tool and well-known for its application in various fields of
earth sciences, but it has emerged as a new subject with immense potentiality and opportunity in recent days.
The Department of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System was established in 2003 with the view to cater the
increasing demand of qualified and skilled manpower in this rapid growing field. It is one of the first Remote Sensing &
GIS departments in West Bengal to start the course of Remote Sensing and GIS at Post Graduate and Doctoral levels.
The Alumni of this Department have occupied responsible positions in India and abroad. Our students have unique
opportunity to undertake their dissertation collaboratively with renowned state and central government agencies and
research institutes and they are encouraged to carry out innovative research during their project period. Several Remote
Sensing and GIS related Research and Consultancy Projects have been undertaken by the faculty of the Department
Why Remote Sensing & GIS?
There has been a rapid growth in the use of digital spatial data in many areas of resource management and the environmental
sciences. With the advent of numerous open source and commercial software for processing satellite data, this technique has become
popular for analyzing spatial problems in reasonable cost and time. This technique has wide potentiality in the areas of Earth Sciences,
Agriculture, Forestry, Hydrology, Soil and Urban studies as well as in national security services. Remote Sensing coupled with Global
Positioning System (GPS) accepted widely all over the world for navigational purposes and for its utility to collect accurate field based data.
As the demand for skilled personnel is increasing tremendously in government and commercial sectors, there is a need to generate sufficient
human resource for catering the demand in this area. This course aims to develop both a solid theoretical understanding and a comprehensive
practical introduction regarding the use of geographic information systems and simple modeling using digital spatial data. On the completion
of this course, students will obtain knowledge on application of satellite based data in various fields, i.e., earth science, hydrology, wildlife
habitat and forestry, agriculture, urban, mining, communication and mobile networking etc
Course Objective:
The objective of this course is to introduce the theoretical, technical and applied aspects of Remote Sensing for monitoring and managing earth resources.
Particular emphasis is placed on the collection, processing and application of aerial and satellite based data. The course emphasizes the theoretical and
technical aspects of image acquisition and interpretation. In brief the curriculum covers the following aspects of Remote Sensing & GIS.
