Professor Susanta Kumar Chakraborty has assumed his responsibility as the Vice-Chancellor of Vidyasagar University
on 17th July, 2023. He has been serving as Professor of Zoology of this University since 7th February, 2004.
He joined this University as Lecturer in Zoology on 4th March, 1991 and was promoted to the post of Reader in Zoology,
on 7th February, 1996 and continued in that post prior to becoming the Professor. He was born on 31st July, 1960
and educated himself from the primary (Charushila Bidyamandir) to higher secondary (Midnapore Collegiate School)
to graduation (Midnapore College), all are located at the Midnapore District town and obtained his M.Sc. (Zoology),
M.Phil. (Environmental Sciences) and Ph.D. (Marine Sciences) Degrees from the University of Calcutta.
He has been imparting teaching, spanning a period of more than thirty five years, mostly in the postgraduate level
covering different aspects of Zoology in general and Ecology/Environmental Science in particular.
During the span of his long service career in Vidyasagar University (little more than 32 years and 5 months),
Professor Chakraborty has shouldered a number of administrative responsibilities in his own University which
include Head of the Department for four times, as Dean Faculty of Science for a period of more than four years,
as a member of Executive Council for more than 15 years, as a member of Finance committee for 6 years, as the Chairman
of Purchase Committee, as the President of Governing Bodies of two large colleges of Midnapore (West) district,
each for a duration of 4 years etc. He has been in active research since 1982 after completion of his M.Sc. in Zoology
from the Calcutta University. He did his M.Phil. in Environmental Science and Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of
Calcutta in the years 1984 and 1992 respectively. His subject preferences on research centered around Ecology and
Environmental Management which include several other subject components like Eco-dynamics of Coastal, Mangrove, Fresh Water Wetlands,
Rivers and Estuaries, Biodiversity assessment and Management, standardization of biotechnological tools for environmental monitoring and
Organic solid waste recycling. He has been also associated with action research on the Integration of Rural Biotechnologies for the
environmental management, eco-restoration and livelihood generation. So far, he has successfully supervised the Ph.D. thesis of 40 researchers,
published around 200 research papers in different reputed International and National Journals, written a number of books including text
books on Riverine Ecology [Volume-I (pages- 917) and Volume – II (pages- 566) published by Springer Nature, U.S.A. and another text book
has also been published from the Springer Nature, U.S.A. on Wetland Ecology as first author (pages - 709)], contributed significantly in
preparing a Manual for the Assessment of Biodiversity (Mangrove Ecosystems) jointly with Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (C.M.F.R.I.),
Cochin, Kerala, completed fifteen (15) research projects including Consultancy projects on Environmental Impact Assessment (E.I.A.),
visited several countries such as Australia, U.S.A., Hong Kong, Belgium, France, and Bangladesh in connection with his academic commitments.
He has achieved two (2) International Patents, one from the Australia Government on Anticancer and Bio-remediating biotic agents in an
innovatively prepared vermicompost from the paper mill wastes and other one from the German Government on Control of Exotic Weeds through
vermicomposting. He has delivered more than hundreds of lectures in different Seminars/Symposia/Conferences/Workshops/Refreshers Courses etc.
in different parts of India and abroad highlighting his scientific thoughts and research achievements. He has also been serving other
Universities of India as an Expert Member of Selection Committees, Administrative and Academic Bodies alongside contributing his services as an
Expert Member for several Government Departments like U.G.C., I.C.A.R. etc. He is associated with a number of Scientific Bodies in India as
Life Members and in the editorial systems of a number of Reputed Journals like Elsevier, Springer, Taylor and Francis, Wiley, Oxford, Cambridge etc.).
Presently, he is acting as the Chief Editor of the Vidyasagar University Journal of Biological Sciences (V.U.J.B.S). He has received a number of
awards in recognition of his research commitments. He is being recognized as potential advisor/consultant in the sphere of academic development
in the realm of higher education, in the field of coastal zone management and mangrove restoration programs and also in the arena of
Environmental Monitoring and Management.
