Digital Herbarium of Department of Botany & Forestry, Vidyasagar University (Under UGC DRS-SAP-II Programme)
Herbarium or herbal museum is the epitome of plant biodiversity as well as linchpin of plant taxonomic research. To build such huge physical database, it requires extensive and rigorous processes. With the advent of modern technology and to reciprocate it in proper way, Dept. of Botany & Forestry, Vidyasagar University steps into the digital database as a part of green digitization programme under the aegis of UGC DRS-SAP-II. The herbarium of Dept. of Botany & Forestry contains about 5000 specimens and arranged according to Bentham- Hooker System of classification. Plant specimens are collected from green belted lateritic South-West Bengal. The primary aim is to document and digitize the less explored wild medicinal plants. Creation of Virtual Herbarium and dissemination of digitized data can address the problem of taxonomic data immobilization among local researchers.
