Department Profile
The Department of Philosophy and the Life-world was established in 1989. As per the direction of the U.G.C. some non-traditional courses – courses of applied philosophy and life-philosophy of some contemporary Indian philosophers were included in the syllabus. As such the department carries the non-traditional nomenclature: Philosophy and the Life-world. The Department was first in West Bengal to introduce the courses on Applied Philosophy. During last 25 years the Department has been trying to establish that philosophy is not only the studies in some abstract matters like Self, God, Absolute, immortality of soul etc.: it has also right claims to enter into the day-to-day moral, social and political issues of man’s concrete life. In later years, as per the advice of U.G.C, the Department also included the courses on the philosophy of Cognitive Science, a very contemporary subject.
At present the faculty position of the Department: Total faculty -07, Profesor-01, Associate Professor-04 and Assistant Professor-02. Each class has capacity of-108 students. Admission is strictly on the basis of merit.
Thrust Areas in Teaching and Research: Applied Philosophy and Contemporary Indian Philosophy. The Departmental Journal, ‘Philosophy and the Life-world’ (ISSN 0975-8461) is published regularly. Courses offered: i) P.G. ii) Ph.D. Optional papers offered : Advaita Vedanta, Advanced Logic, Applied Philosophy and Philosophy of Cognitive Science.
Facilities offered to students: Departmental Library for students. Regular seminars/workshops are organized by the Department for getting updated knowledge. Regular students` seminars are also organized for the active participation by the students. Counseling and remedial coaching are offered. There is an opportunity to participate in extension activities through NSS for the students, as well as for the teachers.
