Department Profile
The Department of Sanskrit was established very recently in 2005 to fulfill the academic interest of local students who aspire for Master Degree in Sanskrit. Many students who passed Honours in Sanskrit from the colleges under this University could not get admission into distant Universities and obtain the M. A. degree. It created an academic crisis for a lot of students. To overcome the crisis, the Department of Sanskrit was started at this University.
Regarding teaching and examination, the Department has already introduced semester system a few years ago and after a thorough discussion with BOS members the Department revised and upgraded its existing syllabus. The syllabus of its Department is NET/SET oriented. The topic like ‘Post Independence Sanskrit literature’ is taught exclusively in this Department.
Manuscriptology, which was incorporated in the syllabus from 2010, is among the most important subjects now-a-days. Study of Manuscriptology is important, because over the centuries the vast amount of Sanskrit literature has been preserved in manuscript form by scholars and interested persons. This will help the students in their future research work.
The Department has organized a number of Seminars as well as Special lectures by eminent scholars of various Universities. A Departmental library is already started in the Department, which can fulfill the students’ regular requirements. A number of students of this University qualify National eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Tess (SET) and School Service Commission Examination (SSC) every year.
The Department has also introduced M. Phil and Ph. D programmes. A few months back, Professor Sarbani Ganguli, a noted scholar in the field, has joined the Department as a Senior Fellow, ICSSR. It will surely contribute to the Department’s academic enrichment.
