Department Profile

Department of Sociology began functioning in the year 2005 on self-financing basis on the recommendation of the NAAC peer team. The main focus is being placed on the Post graduate teaching and Research in sociology. Located in the West Midnapore district of West Bengal, it encompasses a unique demographic feature of the region and thereby some importance was given on the study of rural and tribal society. We have also given prime importance to ethnic studies of the region. However, over the years, the Department has expanded in size and quality. To fit itself with the changing needs of community and society and the requirement of the rapid development of the subject, the syllabus has been modified and updated at regular intervals. The choice based credit system (CBCS) has been introduced from the academic year 2016-2017 and it has been further revised from the academic year 2018-2019 through the incorporation of sociology of family and kinship, sociology of gender, ethnographic field studies and exposure to field visit, social psychology etc. To make the students aware of their society, we have two compulsory courses on ethnographic field work and dissertation. The students are also generating important information on various topics through these field work. Our department has also introduced M.Phil. course from the session 2019-2020. The Semester system of learning was introduced in the department in 2009 – 2010. A number of Major and Minor Research Projects, Innovative Research Scheme have been sanctioned by UGC, DRD cell, Paschim Midnapore Zilla Parishad and Govt. of West Bengal in favour of faculty members of our department. Our students are regularly participating in community service programmes through NSS cell of our department and they also participate in various sports and regularly organize various cultural programmes and socially relevant programmes in our department. The Department regularly organizes seminars and special lectures on various social issues. Our faculties are also regularly participating in various National and International Level Conferences and receiving grants, fellowship and awards from different reputed bodies.
