Department Profile
Physics Department of Vidyasagar University began its journey in the year 1989 with an aim to run the
MSc programme as well as research in physics. Syllabus was introduced at par with UGC for two year
MSc programme which consists of Part I & part II . The intake was 25 students and there was only
two fulltime teachers. Classes were taken also by professors of IIT (kgp), Calcutta University,
Jadavpur University, Burdwan University. Their teaching as well as their advice gave a solid base
to move the department in the right direction. The result is that two students from the initial
batches later on became faculty of IIT.
This is the beginning. Research is also initiated from the beginning of nineties. The intake of MSc
students was increased gradually to 55 and also the number of fulltime teachers reached to 6
in the year 2001 as sanctioned by UGC. Syllabus was updated regularly. Students are doing well in
the new system & more and more students are qualified in NET, GATE, SET etc. Dr. Dlilip Kumar Jana ,
distinguished alumni is a Scientist who is now involved in CERN Project and working in Switzerland.
MSc in physics under distance mode is introduced . This mode of teaching is required since the seats
in regular course are limited. The students of distance mode are also performing well.

At present 6 faculties are working in the department as fulltime teachers.
Thrust area is now nanoscience and nanotechnology. Though the number of
teachers are less than the required strength they are still doing good research in
their respective fields. Three of them have their own projects and the total amount of
sanctioned money is about 41 Lakhs. Total number of publications from this department in last
four years is about hundred and most of these publications are in reputed journals. Dr S.Ghosh got
Boyscast fellowship award in2008. . Dr. K.Chatterjee visited
    Surface and Nano Science Division,
Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, Taiwan in 2009 and 2011. Dr.S.Saha and Prof R. R.Pal both visited
Sanghai,China to present papers in the international conference in 2012. Renowned professors from other Universities
also visit as a visiting fellow to give special lectures to students. Department also organize national
seminar in each year in which students of this department fully participate.
