Biographical Sketch
Professor Sandip Chattopadhyay is an academician, researcher, and educator in the fields of Biomedical Science, Molecular Toxicology, and Reproductive Endocrinology. He currently serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Bio-Medical Laboratory Science and Management at Vidyasagar University.
An alumnus of Vidyasagar University, he earned his Ph.D. in 2001 and subsequently carried out Post-Doctoral Research at Oklahoma State University, where he worked on the molecular aspects of fusigenic events between lamellar bodies and plasma membranes during lung surfactant secretion. His research interests encompass environmental toxicology, reproductive endocrinology, cellular biochemistry, and molecular physiology, with current focus on the molecular pathogenesis of PCOD and its probable therapeutic interventions.
A dedicated mentor and visionary teacher, Professor Chattopadhyay has successfully guided numerous Ph.D. scholars who are now contributing with distinction in prestigious academic, research, healthcare, and scientific institutions across India and abroad, reflecting the enduring impact of his mentorship on the global scientific community. His scholarly excellence has been recognized through several prestigious fellowships, academic honors, and research distinctions throughout his career.
Academic Interest
Professor Sandip Chattopadhyay specializes in cellular and molecular biochemistry and toxicology, with interdisciplinary research spanning molecular, cellular, and environmental toxicology, reproductive endocrinology, physiology, and pharmacology. His academic and research pursuits are centered on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying toxicant-induced physiological and reproductive dysfunctions, along with the exploration of therapeutic and nutritional interventions for disease management.
His research has significantly contributed to the field of reproductive and environmental health, particularly in studying the toxicological impact of environmental contaminants and metabolic disorders on female reproductive physiology. His doctoral research investigated arsenic-induced reproductive toxicity and the protective strategies against its harmful effects, laying the foundation for his long-standing interest in molecular toxicology and endocrine physiology.
During his postdoctoral tenure at Oklahoma State University, he worked on the molecular aspects of fusigenic events between lamellar bodies and plasma membranes associated with pulmonary surfactant secretion, thereby expanding his expertise into cellular membrane dynamics and molecular physiology.
At present, his research is strongly focused on the molecular pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and the search for novel therapeutic interventions using phytochemicals, nutraceuticals, probiotics, and medicinal plant derivatives. His ongoing research projects investigate the ameliorative potential of natural compounds such as Vitex negundo, Asparagus racemosus, Syzygium cumini, and Saccharomyces boulardii in experimental models of PCOS, obesity, and metabolic disorders.
Professor Chattopadhyay’s broader academic interests also encompass nutraceutical science, laboratory biosafety, clinical biochemistry, metabolic endocrinology, and translational biomedical research. His work integrates biochemical, physiological, pharmacological, and molecular biological approaches to understand disease mechanisms and develop evidence-based therapeutic strategies.
An accomplished research mentor, he has supervised several doctoral scholars who are presently engaged in diverse prestigious academic, research, healthcare, and scientific positions in India and abroad, reflecting the depth and impact of his academic leadership and research guidance.
