Biographical Sketch
I was born in Chandannagar (a French Colony that merged with India on 2 October 1954, a dozen years before my birth), supervised by Dr Suniti Ghosh (Choudhury), MBBS (Cal.), Freedom Fighter who (with Shanti Ghosh, another schoolgirl) shot the Deputy Collector of Comilla. I grew up in the hill station of Darjeeling, attended Loreto Convent, and had my fill of living in a multicultural society there. Returning to Chandannagar, I finished my school education from St. Joseph’s Convent. Then, I moved to Lady Brabourne College, Kolkata, for pursuing the Higher Secondary and Bachelor in Arts (English Honours) courses. Postgraduation from the University of Calcutta facilitated my attending the classes of teachers whom I attempt to emulate in my professional career. I proceeded to Rabindra Bharati University for my M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees – my guru, Professor Subhas Sarkar, eminent Eliot scholar, bore the torch showing me (in the tradition of his guru, Professor Subodh Chandra Sengupta) how to negotiate the labyrinth of research on T.S. Eliot's plays. Implementation of my academic training happened in Raja Peary Mohan College, Uttarpara, where I shared my understanding with the learners for over 21 years, before I joined Vidyasagar University for the same purpose. During this journey as a facilitator for the learners, I have also shared my research findings in academic fora from the local to the global spaces--as speaker and as author.
Academic Interest
T.S. Eliot’s writings, followed by Girish Karnad’s plays, form the staple of my academic and research interests. Indian theatre has always attracted my attention. So too, European and American playwrights. Shakespeare is a guide for understanding the texture of theatre—an unending source of inspiration. An inherent propensity for archival research has propelled me towards studies related to iconic figures like Vidyasagar, Baboo Joykrishna Mukherjee and Tagore, among others. Moving to literature about present-day ecological concerns, I find academic interest in the ways in which authors and theorists are expressing themselves in various ways. My personal activity amongst the Kheria Sabar Adivasi people has become entwined with research about them, as well. Travel writing as a repository of documentation of observations also draws my academic attention. Translation from Bengali to English and vice versa is a joy I engage in.
