About the Centre
The Centre for Environmental Studies (CES) is an interdisciplinary centre for research and education in environmental studies including environmental history and environmental humanities. The Centre was founded in 2018 at Vidyasagar University to undertake activities related to various environmental issues, promote Environmental Education and Awareness, Research and Management. The Centre will meet its mission by fostering and supporting collaborative research programs, developing and maintaining the state of the art facilities for research and facilitate the development and implementation of multi-disciplinary research programmes in the field of Environmental Studies. Owing to its inherent interdisciplinary nature the centre will be run with the academic inputs from resource persons of diverse disciplines from within Vidyasagar University and also various universities and institutes in India and abroad.
Aim
The Centre has been established to conduct research and produce interdisciplinary knowledge as an integral part of the programme. It will offer different certificate, diploma and degree courses related to various fields of environmental studies for students, working professionals and other interested persons in view to widening their knowledge and skills and to make them suitable for today’s competitive job market. It also aims to open a fruitful dialogue between Environmental Science and Environmental Humanities by fostering research in cross disciplinary areas. The major objective of the centre will be to formulate research strategies required for the development of the emerging frontier of environmental studies by undertaking research projects on various themes of the thrust area including History of Conservation and Management of Nature, The State Policy and the Natural World, The Intellectual History of Environmental Ideas in India and building up of necessary research tools for opening up new questions. The research projects of the centre would contextualize and historicize the diverse issues within the framework of global environmentalism, the present environmental debate and the ongoing global warming faced by the human society today. They aim of the centre is to capture existing conjunctions across environmental philosophy, environmental history, eco-criticism, cultural geography, cultural anthropology, and political ecology and also seek to integrate debates so far largely shaped by different disciplinary contexts.
Mission
